Though not specifically housed in English, these interdisciplinary groups and centers have significant interaction with faculty and students in the English department. They furnish important opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction between researchers with similar interests.
Programs & Centers
- Center for 18th-Century Studies
The Center for 18th-Century Studies is home to one of the liveliest and most energetic interdisciplinary groups on campus. With over 20 affiliated faculty members drawn from eight departments and a large number of graduate students, the Center:
- organizes monthly discussions of members’ research
- awards three graduate fellowships annually
- hosts a national workshop-format conference every spring
- publishes an annual volume of its proceedings
- gives an annual prize for the best interdisciplinary book in the field
- Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities
The Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities responds to the desire of scholars and students in all areas of the humanities to investigate the foundational issues of their disciplines. At the heart of our enterprise is a reading group that weds the discipline of research and teaching to the spontaneity of collaborative discussion and debate.
- Cultural Studies Program
Drawing upon recent developments in cultural, social, and literary theory, the Cultural Studies Program emphasizes the investigation of cultural production and the social construction of values, ideas, and belief systems.
- Department of American Studies
The Department of American Studies considers the history, politics, and cultures of the Americas from an interdisciplinary perspective. Historically grounded in English and History, the field now incorporates people, ideas, and methods from across the Humanities and Social Sciences. Our practice is a form of critical citizenship.
- Icelandic Reading Group
Hit íslenzka þing. Hvern mánuð komum vér saman til þess, at þýða sögur ok skemta oss með viðrœðu, vist, ok drykk. Á þessi stundu (janúar 2008) erum vér at þýða Eyrbyggja sögu. Spyrið ér ráðs goða vár, Megan Hartman ok Grant Simpson.
- Medieval Studies Institute
The Medieval Studies Institute is a center for the study of medieval cultures from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries. Participating faculty are drawn from twenty academic departments at Indiana University.
- Renaissance Studies Program
Renaissance Studies is a multi-disciplinary program for faculty and graduate students who work on Renaissance and early modern materials from the 14th to the 17th century. The mission of the program is to foster dialogue and collaboration across disciplines, languages and traditions. Renaissance Studies organizes a vast range of events, including conferences, lecture series, symposia and roundtables.
- Victorian Studies
The Victorian Studies Program at Indiana University is the intellectual home of a dynamic and innovative collection of faculty and graduate students working on topics including Victorian media culture, animal studies, moral psychology, war, religion, liberalism, psychology, narrative theory, and gender studies, among many others.
