Undergraduate advising

Consulting with your academic adviser is key to your success as an undergraduate. Your advisor will help you assess your options and take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. It’s a good idea to meet with your advisor at least once a semester to review your academic progress and make sure you’re on track for graduation and meeting your goals.

Our advisors are experts concerning the English department and academic life on campus. They can help you:

Identify your academic and career goals
Declare a major, minor, or major concentration
Develop an academic plan
Combine your degree with other majors or minors
Understand requirements, academic policies, and procedures
Select and enroll in appropriate classes
Learn to use available academic tools, such as the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin, the degree map for your major, and your Academic Advisement Report
Connect with academic support services
Integrate co-curricular opportunities such as internships, study abroad, student organizations, and undergraduate research
Apply for honors or scholarships
Transfer course evaluations
Make use of other campus resources, including career services

To explore your options with an English advisor, schedule an in person or virtual meeting using the Student Appointment Scheduler via One.IU.edu. You can also contact the English Advising Office at engladv@iu.edu.

Advising resources

The Academic Advisement Report (AAR), also referred to as a Degree Progress Report, is a personalized report explaining your requirements and progress toward your degree.

To view your AAR, log on to One.IU, go to the Student Center, click on the link “My Academics and Grades,” and then click on the “View My Advisement Report.” Select your institution (Bloomington) and Report Type, and push the “Process Request” button to run the report. At the top of the report, click the “Expand All” button to ensure that you will see the complete report.

An iGPS Plan or degree map is one tool you can use to plan your coursework for future semesters. The standard degree map shows one possible path to graduation in your major, but you can also forge your own unique path.

Create a “what-if” report

You can also create a What-If Academic Advisement Report that allows you to:

Produce a progress report for a different major or minor
See how in-progress courses can apply to a different program
Add courses to determine how they apply to your degree program
Add possible future courses to see how they will apply to a different program

While “what-if” reports help you get a sense of various routes to your degree, be aware that they are unofficial and may be inaccurate. You should always check in with your academic advisor for a more accurate report or to determine how future courses might count.

Consult the Bulletin for degree requirements, policies, majors, courses, and opportunities within and outside of individual departments and programs.

Be sure to refer to the Bulletin that corresponds to the year you entered IU.

Declaring a minor, second major, or certificate outside English

If you would like to declare a major, minor, or certificate in another College department, see the respective department or program advisor(s). To declare non-College of Arts and Sciences minors and certificates, please check with us for information.

Graduating Seniors

Apply to graduate here well in advance of your expected graduation date. Schedule an advising appointment before enrolling for your final semester to be sure you are meeting degree requirements.
