The Department of English annually awards numerous prizes, awards, and scholarships to undergraduate English majors, as well as to non-majors in English department classes. These are generally awarded at the discretion of faculty committees on the basis of student excellence in writing, overall work, public service, and (in some cases) on the basis of student need. These range from the Culbertson Prize for Critical Writing awarded to outstanding writing in composition classes, to awards like the Margaret Banks James Award, the Bertha Eikenberry Scholarship, and the Paul E. and Mary F. Howard Scholarship, all given to advanced undergraduate majors.
English majors also can find employment in work-study positions and paid internships. Information about such opportunities is distributed by our departmental advisors.
