Course Description

TOPIC: “Of What Value Is (the Study of) Literature?”

The goal of this class is to introduce you to strategies for studying literature that foster an attention to language, both literal and figurative, and an ability to read, interpret, analyze, and appreciate texts written in a variety of genres. To meet this goal, we will spend the semester reading and writing about poetry, fiction, drama, and film representing a range of historical periods and illustrating a variety of literary conventions and techniques. Ultimately, we will use these texts to explore and to help us determine for ourselves the most compelling reasons for studying Literature in the first place.
