Course Description
Science fiction has evolved as a literature that dramatizes the interaction of science, technology and society. We will investigate how the genre links developments in science and technology with ongoing social concerns regarding race, gender and the desire for human progress. We will explore how its conventions address earthly fears and hopes through themes such as space travel, alien contact, robotics, technological utopianism, and human evolution. Authors will likely include Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, H. G Wells, and Ursula K. Le Guin. 2 papers, 2 exams, 1 research team project, participation and attendance.
