Course Description

The aim of this course is to develop your abilities to read and write about fiction analytically as well as emotionally. We will examine how various 19th-21st century authors work in both traditional and experimental ways with elements of fiction. We will work on strategies for finding patterns in textual evidence and on posing questions that invite more than one interpretation. Through a series of short and longer writing assignments, we will strengthen your abilities to make thoughtful and complex interpretive arguments. In addition to short stories by various authors, we will read novels by Toni Morrison, Paul Auster, and Tim O'Brien. There will be short response papers, two comparative analysis papers, a midterm exam, and a final exam.
