- Course Description
According to Descartes, to wonder is to look closely and intensely at something new, and then to ask questions that put the novel object into conversation with what you already know. We will do precisely that, examining poems, plays, novels, and nonfiction ranging from Descartes to the 17th-century astronomical poet Hester Pulter, and from Shakespeare to 21st-century poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil. We'll read theory and literary criticism that illuminates issues such as the ways we think about knowledge, and wonder’s history as a tool of colonialism. Coursework will include short writing pieces, a research paper, and a final exam.
