- Course Description
- This course surveys major works in twentieth- and twenty-first century Anglophone literatures. We will read classics by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, William Carlos Williams and Jean Toomer; important mid-century works by Samuel Beckett, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Bishop; celebrated texts by Thomas Pynchon, the poet John Ashbery; and cutting edge 21st-century work, by Harryette Mullen, Ben Lerner, and Sheila Heti.
Along the way, we will travel from New York City to the streets of Paris, from the deep South of the early twentieth century to contemporary Toronto, from Harlem to the Southern California of the 1960’s.
