Each year the department offers a small number of fellowships. First-year fellowships are generally available only to graduate students entering the literature concentration; applicants for the Ph.D. program who have already done graduate work elsewhere will normally not be considered for them. In 2016, fellowships will carry a stipend of about $18,000, plus a tuition and fee-remission that covers roughly 90% of the cost of enrollment. Fellowship packages are typically succeeded by an Associate Instructorship, renewable for five years or more, provided the student makes reasonable progress toward fulfilling degree requirements. To apply for a fellowship, the applicant should check "yes" on item 6 of the application form.
