M.A. Degree with Concentration in Language

This Master’s degree appeals to students who have a particular interest in language. It examines the English language—its nature, structure, diversity, and development.

The degree requires a minimum of 30 hours of course work, including the courses ENG-G 500 Introduction to the English Language, and ENG-G780 Special Studies in English Language.

You also take at least 12 further hours in English language courses.

Because the M.A. is conceived as a pathway to the doctoral program, the English department does not typically offer a terminal Master’s degree.

Reading proficiency in one foreign language is required, with language competency verified by the relevant foreign language department or program at IUB.

A thesis is optional. This degree requires a four-hour written examination.
