Professor Bernhardt-Kabisch was educated at Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium (Stuttgart), the University of Stuttgart, the University of Teubingen, and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1962). A Fullbright Fellow in 1955-57 and IUB faculty member since 1962, he was director of the Collins Living-Learning Center from 1977 to 1990, co-editor of Yearbook of Comparative & General Literature (1980-1990), and resident director of the IU Overseas Study program in Hamburg (1990-1991, 1994-1995).
Concentrating on English and European Romanticism, Wordsworth and Robert Southey, Professor Bernhardt-Kabisch, in addition to publishing widely in critical journals, published Robert Southey in 1977 and "The Stone and the Shell" in the 1994 Studies in Romanticism.
