Course Description

Topic: Year of Genius - 1856

In this class we will read three masterpieces published in 1856:  Gustave Flaubert’s scandalizing novel, Madame Bovary, Walt Whitman’s unprecedented collection of poetry, Leaves of Grass, and Herman Melville’s collection of short works, Piazza tales, which includes ”Bartleby the Scrivener” and other amazing tales. We’ll take some trips to the Lilly Library to look at primary materials. Our emphasis will be on deep understanding and unrestrained pleasure.
