Southern Indiana Writing Project
The Southern Indiana Writing Project (SIWP) works alongside K-16 educators in Southern Indiana to support evidence-based writing instruction. We are a community of experienced writing teachers who work together to create spaces for learning, leadership, and professional practice.
How we work to support teachers of writing
We aim to create engaged readers and writers across all grade levels and subject matter. In an
age of Generative AI and advancing technology, we seek to support and educate teachers and students on the craft of composition in the 21st century.
We’re meeting these goals in as many ways as possible, including:
● Advocating for high-quality writing instruction, educational equity, and student agency beyond the classroom, and especially in support of emerging technologies and literacies.
● Supporting engaged reading and writing practices at all levels through partnerships with local K-12 school districts, university faculty, and teachers that contribute knowledge back to the profession.
● Collaborating with community partners to address literacy needs and provide professional development and leadership opportunities for local teachers.
● Developing workshops and networking spaces for teachers to exchange ideas and practices.
How we are organized
SIWP is a local site of the National Writing Project, a U.S. professional development network that brings together teachers, university faculty, and researchers to improve writing instruction across all grade levels. The network is modeled on a Teachers Teaching Teachers approach that helps experienced educators share effective writing practices with their peers. The organization operates through roughly 175 university-anchored local sites hosted on college campuses across all 50 states.
